Our Vision
The National Music in Games Society cultivates a community of mutual support and promotes self-expression, artistic innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration through the appreciation of video game music. Through our work we hope to nurture feelings of inclusivity and belonging in all students and foster a sustainable infrastructure across generations of video game music participation.
NMGS's History
The Music in Games Society was founded by Michael Klinberg in 2022 as a student organization at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. The organization’s mission was to promote appreciation and awareness of video game music through interdisciplinary collaborations across music and game design programs, student-led video game music concerts, guest lectures and workshops, and partnerships with community youth music ensembles. The group was highly successful, receiving over $10,000 in grant funding within its initial two years and amassing over 100 participants. Though video game music has largely been seen as external to or unrelated to the music studied in traditional classroom settings, the Music in Games Society spread awareness of video games and their music as equally sophisticated and deeply meaningful, and provided a space for like-minded people to gather and express their interests. The connectivity and opportunities which MGS provided to students and their local community was inspiring and necessary, and led naturally to the inception of the National Music in Games Society.
